When you leave military service behind, the transition to civilian life can often be turbulent. From understanding how your military skills translate to the civilian world, to facing the world of resumes and stressful interviews, the VFW's Transition and Employment services are committed to providing all service members and veterans with the resources and assistance they need to find a job befitting of their skills and military service.

Knowing what civilian employers are looking for helps the VFW provide you with resume and interview tips that really work. We're dedicated to providing you with key resources and services designed specifically to help you find meaningful work!

Veteran Employment Tools (VET) Program

Are you a veteran who is...

  • Interested in an automotive technician career?
  • Honorably Discharged?
  • Transitioning or recently (within one year) separated from the military?
  • Has at least 4-6 years of experience and have relevant work experience from MOS-related fields?
  • Available to begin work within 30 days from a position start date?
  • In need of assistance to purchase the required toolkit to gain employment?

Transitioning veterans in skilled trades often face the burden of having the technical experience, but not the financial means to afford career-specific tool sets which can often run $5,000 or more. To help address this problem, the VFW has created a pilot program, the Veteran Employment Tools (VET) Program, which will award up to 20 veterans interested in an automotive technician career with a custom Snap-on tool kit, worth an estimated $5,000. We're working with UPS who is currently hiring automotive technicians in markets across the nation, to help ensure transitioning veterans fill some of those positions. Once a selected veteran is hired, UPS will ship the tool kits directly to the veteran so they're ready for their first day of work.

Qualified applicants will then be contacted by a VFW staff member with instructions on potential employment opportunities in the automotive technician career field. 




Entry-Level Examinations

The Entry-Level Public Safety Examination Process provides candidates with job opportunities in a wide variety of job titles such as: Police Officer, State and County Correction Officer, Sheriff's Officer, Fire Fighter, and many other public safety related titles.

Law Enforcement: In order to be considered for employment in an entry-level law enforcement position, applicants must submit individual applications for each jurisdiction in which they are interested in working.  Applicants who meet the eligibility requirements will then be scheduled for and must pass a written exam called the Law Enforcement Examination (LEE). Titles to be included in the 2022 LEE announcement/testing cycle are posted by jurisdiction (i.e., individual municipalities, counties, or state departments).  Candidates who pass the exam will be placed on the employment list for each jurisdiction for which they applied.  Applications can be found for each title at: https://info.csc.state.nj.us/Vats/JobView.aspx.  CSC is currently accepting LEE applications between January 3, 2022 and February 28, 2022.  The LEE is tentatively scheduled to be administered in Spring 2022.

Amazon Military SkillBridge

The Amazon Global Military Affairs (GMA) team established the Amazon Military SkillBridge (AMSB)  program, through the collaborative efforts of the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) by making the company an approved DoD SkillBridge provider. Amazon can now provide military members, who are separating within 180 days of service, with fellowship & apprenticeship opportunities in a variety of different Amazon roles. The goal for GMA is to train and extend full time offers to AMSB participants, just in time for their military transition into the civilian sector.
