2024-25 COMMANDER'S PROJECT

2024-2025 Commander’s/President’s Joint Projects

The 2024-2025 Department of New Jersey Veterans of Foreign Wars and Auxiliary Commander's and President's Projects will include three (3) programs to provide the most effective means to serve our Veterans in need within the State of New Jersey. This year's project will be split between the NJVFW Veterans Assistance Program (VAP), Brig-Vet’s surf therapy program, and Live Golf.

New Jersey Veterans Assistance Program

The NJVFW Veterans Assistance Program (VAP). The VAP was included in this year’s Commander’s Project to ensure the Department of NJ VFW sustains this important program to serve Veterans in the future. The VAP was initially established in 2017-2018 and has been integral to Veterans in need since its implementation. This program has improved the lives of hundreds of veterans and their families. It has kept a roof over their heads and food on the table keeping them safe and out of crisis.

Brig-Vet’s Surf Therapy Program

MISSION STATEMENT Founded by American Combat Veterans and surfers in March of 2022 in Brigantine, NJ, Brig-Surf addresses post-service transition challenges such as PTSD, moral injury, survivor's guilt, and TBI through surf therapy, yoga, wellness sessions, and community. Through Brig-Vet’s surf therapy program, we strive to enhance the psychological and physical well-being of Veterans, active-duty service members, and their families through the experience of surfing. While our small group surf lessons provide an opportunity for more individualized surf instruction, our larger group sessions provide greater opportunities for socialization, team building, family participation, and improved interpersonal communication skills. Our program is available to Veterans and active service members with psychological and/or physical disabilities. Psychological disabilities include, but are not limited to, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Major Depressive Disorder, related mood or anxiety disorders, post-service transition challenges, moral injury, survivor's guilt, and TBI. Physical disabilities include, but are not limited to, spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, and physical amputation.

 Live Golf

Mission Statement Live Golf, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the well-being of Veterans, Law Enforcement and First Responders through the therapeutic benefits of golf and the transformative power of golf therapy. Our mission is to provide Veterans, Law Enforcement and First Responders with an outlet for physical activity, social interaction, and emotional healing. Live Golf acknowledges the mental health challenges that many Veterans, Law Enforcement and First Responders face during their transition to civilian life. Through our golf therapy program, they are provided with a supportive and therapeutic environment where they can engage in physical activity while fostering social connections and emotional well-being. Our mission is very important to us, so that we can expose the game of golf, its values, while creating an outlet. The objectives are: • Provide Veterans, Law Enforcement, and First Responders with a space to learn and practice golf skills. • Foster social connections and a sense of community among participants. • Educate participants about mental health benefits of physical activity and social engagement. • Equip participants with coping strategies and resources to manage stress, anxiety and other mental health challenges.
